SYRIA, VIRGINIA – Clay Hamilton of Evergreen, Virginia, and Tyler Martin of Appomattox, Virginia, represented Appomattox County at the 2024 Virginia Institute for Cooperative Education (VICE) annual conference. They were two of 44 individuals from Virginia selected to attend. The event, sponsored by the Virginia Cooperative Council, was held at Graves Mountain Lodge in Syria, Virginia. The leadership conference is designed for high school juniors and seniors to learn about the cooperative business model through an interactive instruction that included a live simulation, “Who’s Minding the Store?” Teams worked together to run cooperative businesses and, in doing so, learned how to make marketing and financial decisions and interpret the results of their decisions through operating statements and financial reports. At the end of the weekend-long conference, both Hamilton and Martin each completed an exam on the “Welcome to Cooperatives” manual. When asked about their experience, they each remarked about how engaging the conference was and that they both felt better equipped to interpret and act upon business decisions.
